How to Roll a Cone
The dream of every smoker is to roll the perfect cone-shaped joint. Rolling is a simple, but not easy, art, and takes many smokers quite some time to perfect. Once you’ve gotten the hang of rolling joints, you may want to elevate your smoking game and roll a cone-shaped joint. Cone-shaped joints, often just called “cones,” are joints where the end farthest from the filter is larger than the base, giving a cone-like appearance. Here’s how you can roll one of your own.
Step One: Make a Filter
Filters go by many names, and you’ll see them called crutches or even a tippy. No matter what you call them, filters are necessary for the perfect roll. You can make filters out of any sturdy paper without ink on it — think cardstock— but it’s usually simplest to buy a pack of paper filters. They usually come with perforations for easy folding of “fins,” which have an accordion shape when folded. Roll your filter up with the folded portions on the inside.
Step Two: Add Flower
The next step is to add your flower. Start as you would with a normal joint, and grab some rolling paper. Rolling paper comes in a few varieties made of different materials, and any of them work for cones. Which you choose is totally up to preference. From here, some find it easiest to take the rolling paper and create a fold like you normally would, but at an angle. This will make it simpler to achieve a cone shape as the paper naturally curves where necessary. Once folded, place the filter at one end of the paper, and then add the desired amount of flower. You can achieve a cone shape whether you’re rolling with a gram or an eighth.
Step Three: Shape the Cone
In order to achieve your shape, you’ll need to fold excess paper over the filter. Hold one end of the rolling paper in each hand. Use a finger-snapping motion to roll the joint and tuck paper into the flower. This method is called the “pinch” method and simply requires guiding the paper into position as you roll it tighter.
Step Four: Twist and Close
Lastly, moisten the gum strip to make it sticky and glue the roll shut. At the end opposite of the filter, twist or tuck the tip — it can be helpful to also lightly moisten your fingers before doing so. Once your joint is secured, you’re ready to roll — or, smoke, that is!
